Learning your child may need a liver transplant can be overwhelming. Our Liver Transplant team offers you and your child exceptional care throughout the process, from initial consultation to post-transplant monitoring. Our experienced transplant team is here to answer your questions and support your family at each step of the transplant journey.

The pediatric liver transplant process

Liver transplant family handbookBefore liver transplant surgery

Following referral to our program, we schedule your child for an initial consultation with our transplant hepatologist. This first visit helps us determine the severity of your child’s liver disease and whether a transplant is needed. We will get to know you and your child, and you'll get to know us.

If your child needs a liver transplant, the process begins with scheduling a pre-transplant evaluation. The initial evaluation typically takes two to three days. Learn more about the pre-liver transplant process.

Liver transplant surgery and recovery

Once a liver becomes available, we contact your family to come to the hospital. It is normal to have a variety of emotions as you anticipate the pending surgery. Remember that children receiving liver transplants are living longer and healthier lives because of advances in surgery and better pre- and post-transplant care.

After liver transplant surgery

Children who receive a transplanted liver get follow-up care throughout their life. Studies show that patients have fewer complications and better outcomes when families work closely with a post-transplant medical team.
