Palliative Care Services

When a child has a chronic condition or a serious illness, families often feel that life has become a roller coaster ride. Our team supports patients and families along their medical journey, no matter the outcome. We work hand-in-hand with families as they talk through their goals, hopes, wishes, and fears.

Pediatric palliative care focuses on children and young adults diagnosed with complex, chronic or serious conditions and their families. The goal of pediatric palliative care is  improving quality of life in partnership with cure-directed or disease-modifying care.

To meet with the pediatric palliative care team, ask your primary care provider for a referral or call (615) 875-2273.

Palliative care improves quality of life for children and their families

Meeting with a member of our team can be helpful as soon as families receive the diagnosis of a serious or life-limiting medical condition. The team helps children live as comfortably and as fully as possible with their condition. We also help families prepare for peaceful transitions, without giving up hope. Pediatric palliative care can begin with a diagnosis and continue, with or without curative treatment, for as long as it benefits a child and family.

Pediatric palliative care is offered in the hospital, in community-based settings or at home.

Pediatric palliative care:

  • Helps support families with medical decision making and planning for the future
  • Offers acute and chronic pain and symptom management
  • Provides emotional and spiritual support for the whole family
  • Arranges hospice and end of life care when needed

Our team

The pediatric palliative care team works with your child’s other healthcare providers and specialists. We maintain clear and regular communication with the family and the child’s medical treatment team helping to provide care coordination and communication, and aiding you in making informed decisions about difficult medical decisions.

Pediatric palliative care and hospice are different

Pediatric palliative care is intended for children and their families at any stage in a serious illness, while hospice is focused on quality of life and care closer to end of life.
