Tri My Best Triathlon

We are thrilled to announce the third annual Champ's A-Team Tri My Best Triathlon.

The Tri My Best Triathlon is an adaptive race sponsored by Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. The race pairs a child with a disability with a buddy to complete the race together as a team, using any modifications necessary to ensure the success of each child. By working in a team, each child learns that winning is not at the end of the race, but in the journey getting there together. Buddy teams are accompanied by an adult buddy throughout the race.

Race distances

Swim: 50 yards (2 laps)
Bike>: 0.75 miles
Run: 0.4 miles

Registration

Registration is now open. Registration is limited to 120 children, or 60 buddy teams comprising one child with a disability and one without. You do NOT have to have a buddy to register. We will pair your child with a buddy if necessary. If you have a buddy you would like to race with, please note this under "Buddy Pairing Preference" on the registration site.

Schedule of events

Saturday, July 7

3 p.m. Mandatory pre-race meeting and packet pick-up at Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center

This meeting is required of all race participants and at least one parent. Adult buddies are also encouraged to attend. This meeting will be a chance for children to meet their buddy and hear what to expect on race day, including what each team will be doing for each leg of the race. Children will be able to pick-up their race packets at this meeting, as well as drop off their bikes and any adaptive equipment needed for race day.

This meeting is mandatory. Please do not register your child for this race if you and he/she are unable to attend. 

Sunday, July 8

7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Bike and equipment drop off in the transition area

9 a.m. - Race begins

Cost

The event fee is $25. Each participant will receive a race t-shirt. Champ's A-Team has a NO REFUND policy. Please note that we do not offer any refunds or discount codes if you cancel your registration for this event.

Volunteers

We need lots of volunteers to make this event a success. Volunteer roles are needed as follows:

Adult buddies: These volunteers are paired with a particular buddy team, and support the children through all three legs of the race.

Race support: These volunteers help direct children as they complete the race and ensure the safety of all participants. Volunteers are also needed to help with equipment in the transition area, as well as pairing children with their parents following the race. There are also many logistical jobs needed to make the race a success.

Volunteer requirements: All volunteers participating with this event must have a background check completed within the last four years, and must have completed the Vanderbilt University Protection of Minors Training. The Volunteer Coordinator will require the dates of completion of both of these items before he/she can assign you a volunteer role. If an updated background check is needed, we are happy to provide this to volunteers at no cost.

Funds raised for the Tri My Best Triathlon support the logistical costs to host the adaptive race. Any funds raised beyond these costs support other adaptive fitness and sports programs at Children's Hospital, including:

Champ's A-Team, A buddy program which pairs children with and without disabilities to complete in community kids triathlons as a team. This program has been in existence since 2013, and children participate in 4-5 community triathlons each year. 

Champ's Fitness Program, An after-school adaptive fitness program for children with disabilities to help learn safe ways to exercise and facilitate transition from physical therapy services into community adaptive fitness programs. This program is proposed to begin in Fall of 2018. 

Champ's Camp, A week-long adaptive sports camp for children with disabilities integrating the principles of strength, balance, flexibility and endurance. This camp focused on fun ways to adapt sports to help children lead a happy, healthy lifestyle, and is proposed to begin in Summer of 2019.
